That a national monument can accommodate a completely different function without losing its characteristics is shown by the design for Gebouw-T by Versseput Architects. They transformed a former military riding school in the centre of Bergen op Zoom into a pop podium.
In the design, the main focus was on the target group and the authentic character of the former military stables, known as Gebouw T. On the one hand, this is reflected in the energetic look and robust, hard-wearing materials of the youth centre and pop podium. On the other hand, Gebouw Gebouw T s monumental entrance has been left intact and the connection with the past is visible. Since the architects also did the furniture design, the spaces were made into a recognisable and integral whole.

Digging for space
The stables actually consisted of only an outer shell. This was retained as the outer façade of the pop stage, while inside a new building was built into a soundproof inner shell. In its original state, the stables did not offer enough space to accommodate the full programme requested.
By excavating the entire ground floor one and a half metres, sufficient space was created to create two storeys under the hall's rafters. The hall could also be fitted with a balcony, which meant that it would not have to be as deep to accommodate the same visitor capacity. At the same time, this made it possible to optimise sightlines.

Loose new elements
This intervention left enough space in the rest of the building to realise the foyer with adjacent public and teaching areas over two floors. These are located directly behind the façade, so that they have optimum daylight access and are in direct contact with the outdoor space.
Visually, the new spaces are disconnected from the monument. For instance, the existing purlins and trusses are visible between and above the office spaces. Nor does the transparent walkway touch the existing structure anywhere.

Subtle bridge
The building's tough and spartan materialisation is in keeping with its military history. This low-maintenance and resilient material also suits the look and feel of a music venue. This subtly creates a bridge between past and present.
