West Brabant Water Line
The West Brabant Water Line forms part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. It was a close call – the West Brabant Water Line was on the verge of disappearing. Decayed, crumbling, overgrown with grass and scrub. But since 2010, the forts and fortifications have been undergoing restoration. In the process, mountains have been moved – literally. Now history is being brought back to life here, in all its glory.
The West Brabant Water Line dates back to 1628. The purpose of this defensive line was clear: to protect Bergen op Zoom – and with it the trade route from Zeeland to Holland – against an attack by the Spanish. The line consisted of a series of flooded land and marshes. Towering above them were the forts of Henricus, Pinssen, De Roovere and Moermont. A century later, a 5.5-kilometre-long rampart was added between Bergen op Zoom and Fort de Roovere. One kilometre of this has been preserved, between Fort Pinssen and Fort de Roovere.
