An island of polders, mudflats and salt marshes
Tholen is an island in the east of Zeeland. It is a vast polder landscape where the salty scent of the sea hangs over the meadows. Inside the dykes, Tholen is mainly agricultural land; outside the dykes lie vast salt marshes and mudflats: two tidal flats that are flooded twice a day by the tide. Farmland flows into nature reserves, and almost everywhere on Tholen you have a view of the horizon.
Town and region
With many beautifully preserved buildings and listed monuments, you truly feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and can discover the island’s fascinating history. Highlights include the Watersnoodhuis, housed in the former town hall of Stavenisse, and the Roosevelt Information Centre. This centre tells the story of the Roosevelt family, who originally came from Oud-Vossemeer, and how they eventually ended up in America. The Meestoof Regional Museum is also well worth a visit and provides a fine overview of life on Tholen and Sint Philipsland in days gone by.
