The origins of Welberg begin in the 14th century. Welberg is first mentioned in 1356, when the sea had encroached on the surrounding land and a mountain protruded above the surrounding salt marshes. The name Welberg is therefore most probably derived from a relief, lying on the waterfront. In this line, Welberg therefore means a mountain on the waterfront or along a watercourse. In the 15th century, Welberg was recognised as a place of habitation, but there was no talk of village formation yet. This did not happen until the 1920s, when Welberg had 100 houses and Saint Cornelius Church was built in 1928. Welberg acquired its own village character and grew to around 475 houses.

Is part of the municipality Steenbergen with the nuclei of Steenbergen, Kruisland, Welberg, De Heen, Nieuw Vossemeer and Dinteloord.
