Nieuw-Vossemeer has a turbulent history. In 1567, the lords of the Amt fiefdom of Vossemeer issued the first plots of land for the foundation of a new village. At that time, the village was called Nieuw-Vosmaer and belonged to Zeeland. The village suffered greatly from the Eighty Years' War. The newly created village was completely lost. It took until 1609 before the re-diking of the area would start again.

The 1953 flood disaster is still etched in the memory of many older residents of Nieuw-Vossemeer. 50 villagers lost their lives, the entire livestock was lost and the damage to property was enormous.

In Nieuw-Vossemeer, in the Voorstraat, stands the A.M. de Jongmuseum, which preserves, among other things, the ideas of the writer A.M. de Jong. In front of the museum is the statue of Merijntje Gijzen, known from A.M. de Jong's regional novel and the television series. The museum also houses a permanent exhibition on the North Sea floods. There you can see how incredibly high the water rose in 1953.
In Nieuw-Vossemeer, the diversions 'In de Boezem van de Eendracht' starts, a beautiful and varied walking route along water, through woodland and over dykes.

Is part of the municipality Steenbergen with its centres of Steenbergen, Kruisland, Welberg, De Heen, Nieuw Vossemeer and Dinteloord.
