Waterschans

Experience the history of the extensive stronghold surrounded by the waters of the Scheldt. From the 16th century onwards, the Waterschans protected the safe access to the city for several centuries. The construction with stone buildings was like a small village for the soldiers. After the dissolution of its function as a military fortress town, the moats, which were clean because of low tide, were used as fish ponds for fishing. Still later, the entire area on and around the fort was filled with factory halls. That with often polluting industries like iron foundry, asphalt factory and oil tanks. Now the fort has been restored to its former glory and forms a clean natural area for recreation.
