Het Markiezaatsmeer
Between the wooded hills of Brabantse Wal and the busy Schelde-Rijnkanaal lies het Markiezaatsmeer. A beautiful freshwater marsh in development, created by the closure of the Oosterschelde with the Markiezaatskade in 1984. Due to the numbers of species of birds that breed or stay there during migration periods, this giant marsh is considered the Netherlands' most important 'wetland' and has even been designated a valuable European heritage 'Natura2000 area'.
Walking: Het Markiezaatsmeer can be partially accessed from visitor centre Kraaijenberg. Two routes start on the edge of het Markiezaatsmeer near the visitor centre; a yellow route around the Kraaijenberg, and a white route to the bird-watching hut that gives a good view of the marshland.
