The Johanna is a round stone mill and was commissioned by Petrus Johannes Backx in 1862, on the advice of the parish priest of the local parish, who wanted a mill in his parish. The parish had been halved in 1859 as Kalmthoutse Hoek had fallen away. A land border had been drawn through the parish after the secession of Belgium in 1830, but the parish remained a single entity for almost 30 years thereafter. The building permit granted for the Johanna also mentioned use as an oil mill, and it is possible that the mill was equipped as such. There was also a sawmill in the Johanna. During World War II, the mill was used to grind grain and generate electricity. In the 1960s, the mill fell into disrepair. It was sold to the municipality of Huijbergen in 1966, which immediately had it restored. In the years 1968/1969, the mill was made millable. Today, volunteer millers regularly run the mill.
Opening hours
- On the first Sunday afternoon of the month, the mill is open from 1pm to 5pm. Volunteers are always on hand on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. And if you happen to pass by: look for the flag flying. On other days, the mill can be visited by appointment.
