Vesting Kasteel van Wouw
Wouw castle had almost disappeared. But very few people knew where it once stood. Major archaeological excavations in recent years have brought this vanished castle back into view. From the 13th century, Wouw castle was an important residence for the lords - and later the marquises - of Bergen op Zoom. The original castle grew into an impressive fortress in the 15th century, containing a living quarters, spacious gardens, a moat, several outbuildings and two large gatehouses. After siege, looting and decay, the castle was dismantled from 1605 and disappeared from view over the centuries. Until several years ago, archaeological excavations led to extraordinary discoveries and very many finds.

The earthen ramparts, moat and walls were restored. Wouw 's old castle is coming back to life. A new access bridge allows you to enter the grounds, where the earthen ramparts and elevations in the landscape show you the contours of the old castle.
