Oud Gastel is a village that has been part of the Halderberge municipality since 1997. The village's history goes way back in time. As early as the year 1275, Gastel is mentioned for the first time in written sources, as "Gestele". Oud Gastel lies on sandy soil and has therefore been preserved. This is in contrast to the former village of Nieuw Gastel, which lay in lower clay land and was lost soon after its creation in the 16th century. The polder was then flooded (inundated) to stop enemy troops. Take a look at the imposing Sint Laurentiuskerk and the Mastboomhuis.
The national monument Gastels Veer has a rich history, with the visit of Queen Wilhelmina during World War I as a historic moment. Nowadays, the building once again houses catering establishments.
