Landgoed De Hertgang was created in the late 1950s on the Brabantse Wal in Halsteren. The land was partly wasteland, partly in use for growing asparagus. A part had been excavated for sand extraction after the 1953 flood disaster. The sand was used to repair dykes in Zeeland. The Brabantse Wal is about 12 metres high here. On top of the Brabantse Wal is a light sandy soil, which dusts easily (it 'smothers' they say here), below, the seepage water from the Brabantse Wal creates marshy meadows turning into agricultural land of sea clay.
Landgoed De Hertgang is open all year round and also organises regular guided theme walks. On the estate's website, you can find current dates, as well as information on opening hours and entrance fees. You can also combine a visit to the estate with a high tea.
