Dinteloord has all the characteristics of a polder town. In 1605, a large area between the Dintel and Steenbergsche Vliet rivers was reclaimed. It was the largest reclamation project in West Brabant. This "Prinsenland" belonged to Prince Philip William of Orange, the eldest son of Prince William I of Orange. In the same year, 1605, Dinteloord and Prinsenland was also founded. The built-up area was on the Flakkees model and consisted of only two front streets and two back streets on either side of De Kreek. Until 1997, 'Dinteloord and Prinsenland' was an independent municipality. Since 1997, it has been a nucleus within the municipality Steenbergen. Although it is next to Stampersgat, the Suikerfabriek, built in 1908, has traditionally belonged to Dinteloord. Since the municipal redivision in 1997, the Suikerfabriek has been in the territory of Steenbergen municipality.
