Kruisland was founded in the year 1487 with the reclamation of the Kruislandse Polder. Originally, the plan was to build the village on the site of the present hamlet of Gastelsveer. However, Steenbergen did not want Kruisland to also have a harbour. As a result, the village was built in the polder. During major floods in 1682, Kruisland was largely destroyed. The destruction was so extensive that only the church tower (of the Protestant church) was spared. In 1830, the tower was demolished and replaced by a smaller Dutch Reformed church. In 1795, a Catholic church was built in Kruisland, which was replaced by St Gregory's Church in 1887. During World War II, the Catholic and Dutch Reformed churches were blown up by the retreating Germans, just before the liberation of Kruisland on 30 October 1944. The Dutch Reformed church had to be rebuilt. Since 2003, this church(Markt 20) has housed the Craft and Tool Museum De Holle Roffel, which is well worth a visit. In Kruisland, the diversions 'De Kromme Hoek Om' starts. This is a 9 km walking route through the polder landscape with its dike structure in the outskirts of Kruisland.
Also take a look at the Kruislandsedijk/ Blauwe Sluis. Here you will find the largest picnic jetty in the Netherlands, a place to rent a boat or supper, a wine estate, catering facilities, a bird-watching hut and the historic sluizencomplex Bovensas.
