Hugo de Groot the Musical

Everyone knows about his escape from the book chest, but why was Hugo de Groot actually imprisoned? How much are you willing to risk to be able to speak your mind?

In this musical, filled with pop-rock music, this well-known chapter from our history proves to be more relevant than ever. What is freedom worth if you only get it by conforming? What price are you willing to pay for peace?

In a country where faith and politics clash, Hugo chooses tolerance and freedom of thought. In doing so, he makes himself an enemy and loses his own freedom. When Hugo is imprisoned in Loevestein Castle, his voice seems to be silenced for good. Thanks to the courage and resourcefulness of his wife Maria, a plan is hatched, and the rest is history.

‘Hugo de Groot, the Musical’ is a compelling story about freedom, doubt and the courage to give others space. What if freedom starts with you?
