This year, traditionally on the last Sunday of June, the Maria Ommegang passes through the old centre of Bergen op Zoom again. The Maria Ommegang is a cultural-historical phenomenon. This thanksgiving procession, in honour of Mary, takes place because Bergen op Zoom was, relatively speaking, spared major war violence during the Second World War. Historical groups, biblical scenes, floats and song and dance groups alternate.
The procession consists of as many as 700 participants, young and old, divided into 70 groups and supported by six floats. The Maria Ommegang harks back to the Holy Cross procession as it passed through Bergen op Zoom in the Middle Ages. The clothing, the props, the chariots and the play performed make a great impression and provide a wonderful spectacle.
