The Moment of Truth

The Moment of Truth is the first production by the brand-new theatre collective Nieuw Amsterdam, comprising Achraf Koutet, Daniël Kolf, Bilal El Aoumari and Gover Meit. Through new stories and different perspectives, Nieuw Amsterdam aims to explore ways of reimagining the past, present and future of the Netherlands. The name ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ not only refers to the historical name of New York, but also serves as a nod to the city’s established theatre companies.

Four friends who work together at a fast-food chain hatch a daring plan during their night shift: a bank robbery. As one of them is doing work experience at the bank, they have the keys and codes – so what could possibly go wrong? More than they bargained for. The lock turns out to have been replaced and the codes don’t work at night. In a last-ditch attempt to salvage their plan, they go to the bank manager’s house (Stefan de Walle) to get him to give them the correct codes. But even those only work in the early hours of the morning. And so they stay. All night long. What follows is a tense psychological game of cat and mouse in which it becomes increasingly unclear who is actually in control.

The Moment of Truth is a story about big dreams, inequality of opportunity and the moment when you decide to seize an opportunity, whatever the consequences…
