Beet trip Steenbergen
Location
Twenty-five traditional ships sail the Oosterschelde and Volkerak for five days, calling at a different port or sailing area each day.
Sailing, hunting, trees
The Bietentocht keeps alive the beet campaign with the sailing exchange ships. The old sailing ships load a symbolic amount of beets and sail past ports in Zeeland and Brabant, including Steenbergen. They do everything, just like in the old days, as much as possible on sail, bombing by hand and chased by horses. The skippers can earn points during the beet trip: by sailing fast, doing everything by hand, wearing traditional clothing, loading and unloading sugar beet and with creativity around a theme. The fastest ship gets a tin plate, the ship with the most points earns the Beet Bell.
They will arrive in Steenbergen on 23 October.
