City and region  -  Steenbergen

Steenbergen is situated north of Bergen op Zoom, partly on the foothills of the Brabantse Wal. The former fortified town of Steenbergen is the area’s principal town, but the villages of Dinteloord, De Heen, Heense Molen, Nieuw-Vossemeer and Welberg also belong to this municipality. Steenbergen mainly recounts the story of reclaimed land that had to be returned to the sea on several occasions. Steenbergen largely consists of polders, but their scale is just right to make the scenery attractive. Narrow polder roads, situated on dikes and lined with poplars, meander through the area and make it attractive for bikers.

You will also find the cycle-centre-routes in this area. Right in the centre of the village of Nieuw-Vossemeer an old bollard reminds us of the level to which the waters rose during the flood disaster in 1953. This village is well known for the Dutch youth novel and TV-series of the same name,  Merijntje Gijzen. Steenbergen has many waterways and offers a lot of aquatic leisure activities. Its marinas are well-equipped and easily accessible from Zeeland. One of the unique ways to approach Steenbergen is from the Volkerak by the Steenbergse Vliet through the pastoral lock called Benedensas. Excellent connections to the sailing route network offer great opportunities to discover the area by its waterways. Energetic persons have ample opportunity to enjoy outdoor sports. In Steenbergen, it is possible to climb, try an assault course, canoe and spend the night on a raft.
