City and region  -  Woensdrecht

Woensdrecht is situated on the south of Bergen op Zoom and consists of the villages of Woensdrecht, Hoogerheide, Huijbergen, Ossendrecht and Putte. The municipality of Woensdrecht has over 21.000 inhabitants. The villages are located on top of the Brabantse Wal, among woodlands. Woensdrecht and Ossendrecht in particular are raised high above the surrounding area. Approaching the Brabantse Wal from Zeeland you will notice that Zeeland's flat polders suddenly convert into gentle rolling hills on the brink of Brabant. The Brabantse Wal came into being in the last ice age (some 15,000 to 10,000 years ago) and typically shows a vast diversity of scenery. It is a mixture of woodlands, polders and wetlands.
The surrounding area tempts one to go out hiking or biking. The area has excellent facilities for these leisure activities, such as a system of cycle-centre-routes and cosy bikers pubs, to enjoy a fresh coffee, a special ale or an excellent lunch. Nature lovers have ample opportunities too. Wetland Het Markiezaatsmeer (Lake Marquisate) is a nature reserve and an important breeding ground for birds. Border Park De Zoom / Kalmthoutse Heide (River De Zoom / Kalmthout Moors) and Castle Park Moretusbos / Ravenhof (Moretus Woods / Raven’s Court) are situated on the Belgian border. Both areas are open to the public. Not only energetic holiday-makers, but also those who enjoy peace and quiet will find excellent opportunities in Woensdrecht’s vicinity.
